HDI Global Specialty SE occupies a recently renovated office in Rotterdam. Post-covid, working styles and behaviours have changed fundamentally, with employees expressing the need for more flexibility and social spaces to connect and work in. Adjacent to the existing office a walking bridge connecting two buildings freed up and provided an excellent opportunity to address this need. Powerplant collaborated with HDI Global Specialty SE to create a space which is open in its functionality to complement its existing office functional program.
HDI Global Specialty SE is located in a recently renovated office in Rotterdam. Post-covid, work styles and behaviors have fundamentally changed, with employees needing more flexibility and social spaces to connect and work. Adjacent to the existing office, a walkway connecting two buildings became vacant and provided an excellent opportunity to address this need. Powerplant worked with HDI Global Specialty SE to create a space that is open in its functionality to complement the existing functional office program.
Meetings, workshops, ping-pong tournaments, yoga, team building, town halls, one-on-one, hackatons or maybe even a gym. Work Out is a hyper-flexible do-it-yourself breakout space. Since the current office has very clear functionalities, we decided to create a space to accommodate more open activities, such as projects, workshops, creativity, sports or events.
Work Out refers to a gym and its endless possibilities for programming different sports activities into it. Work Out's activity lines on the floor correspond to curtains on the ceiling, allowing for a rich variety of work activities. The flexibility goes beyond room dividing curtains, plants move, furniture fold away and reconfigurable whiteboards allow users to create an endless configuration of spaces.
Instead of formal furniture, Work Out uses fitness equipment and playful elements to host its users and their activities.
Open spaces that allow for user autonomy and connecting events will increasingly become a crucial part of office programs. Offices that create spaces like Work Out will inevitably become places that draw employees back to the office to connect with their colleagues and the company.
